Our Business Model
The New Teacher Project is a revenue-generating nonprofit organization that utilizes a blended revenue model to sustain and advance its work nationwide. The majority of our revenue comes from our work with clients on a fee-for-service basis, often under performance-based contracts. This approach incentivizes TNTP to meet the needs of its clients while continually assessing the value and cost-effectiveness of our services. We find that the fee-for-service model also encourages our clients to be motivated, active collaborators by literally "investing" them in the success of our work.

Some TNTP initiatives also benefit from the support of federal grant programs and/or local private funding. Typically, about 30 percent of TNTP’s annual revenue comes from the support of leading philanthropies, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Arnold Family Foundation, the Joyce Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, and the Charles & Helen Schwab Foundation. With philanthropic support, TNTP is able to expand its impact, develop a top-quality staff and play an unbiased, active role in policy and research.

TNTP responds to critical human capital challenges through four core areas of activity:

Teaching Fellows Programs

We bring expertise in the recruitment, selection, cultivation, preparation and placement of alternate route and traditionally certified teachers. We specialize in recruiting candidates for shortage-area subjects and high-need schools.

Staffing Initiatives

We bring expertise in building capacity at the school level to hire the most effective teachers. We ensure that even the most challenged schools can attract the best teachers and open the school year fully staffed. Areas of specialty include principal trainings in effective teacher hiring, recruitment strategies, screening and selection models, placement and hiring processes, technology solutions, and candidate cultivation.

Training and Certification

We bring expertise in the pre-service preparation, professional development and certification of new teachers for states and school districts. We specialize in developing alternate route teachers by leveraging their existing content expertise and life experiences while grounding them in rigorous, standards-based instructional practices.

Policy and Research

We bring expertise in education policy analysis and data collection, specifically with regard to teacher hiring and school staffing issues. We specialize in identifying the systemic barriers that keep urban schools from hiring the best teachers and developing common-sense recommendations for reform.
