The New Teacher Project Appoints New Leadership

TNTP vice president Ariela Rozman will guide the nonprofit organization as chief executive officer

NEW YORK, NY – The New Teacher Project (TNTP) today announced that Ariela Rozman, vice president of the national nonprofit organization, will become chief executive officer following the departure of Michelle Rhee, who has accepted the nomination of Washington, DC Mayor Adrian Fenty to become Chancellor of DC Public Schools. Timothy Daly, also a vice president, will take on a new role as president.

The New Teacher Project is dedicated to increasing the number of outstanding individuals who become public school teachers and to creating environments for all educators that maximize their impact on student achievement. Since its founding in 1997, TNTP has launched more than 40 programs in 23 states and recruited, prepared or hired approximately 23,000 new, high-quality teachers for school districts nationwide, including those in Washington, D.C., New York City, and Chicago. The New Teacher Project specializes in recruiting teachers for critical needs areas, such as math and science. Seventy-one percent of the 2006 class of New York City Teaching Fellows are teaching high-need subjects, and 50 percent of all NYC Teaching Fellows currently teaching in New York City teach high-need subjects.

TNTP Board Chairwoman Kati Haycock, director of The Education Trust, commended the appointments. “The New Teacher Project will be in capable hands as Michelle Rhee steps into the critical role of guiding Washington DC’s schools," said Haycock. "Ariela and Tim have already had a significant influence on TNTP, and the organization will thrive under their skillful guidance.”

In the six years since Ariela joined The New Teacher Project, she has been integral to the organization’s growth and to bolstering its work bringing high-quality teachers to urban and rural school districts nationwide. Prior to her appointment as CEO, Ariela oversaw TNTP’s Teaching Fellows Programs, growing the organization’s largest business line to a staff of more than 60 individuals and guiding the majority of TNTP’s contracts. The Teaching Fellows Programs line supplies high-need school districts with roughly 2,700 high-quality teachers per year and accounts for approximately 60 percent of the organization’s revenue.

Ariela began her tenure with TNTP as Vice President of Marketing. Before joining The New Teacher Project, she led the Online Marketing group for PlanetRx.com, which included managing the company's online new customer acquisition strategy, media buying and creative agency relationships, and large partnerships with companies such as AOL, Yahoo! and iVillage.. She has also served as a consultant at Bain & Co., a leading strategy consulting firm, where she worked with Fortune 500 companies to improve their overall growth strategies and revenue opportunities. She holds a BA in Political and Social Thought from the University of Virginia.

“I am thrilled to see Ariela lead The New Teacher Project forward,” said Michelle Rhee. “She has exceptional management skills and vision and has proven more than capable of taking this organization to the next level.”

As president, Tim will manage TNTP’s efforts to engage the wider educational community in teacher quality reforms, including recruitment, selection, training, and staffing rules. In his prior role as Vice President for Policy and Research, Tim oversaw The New Teacher Project's efforts to ensure that teacher hiring and staffing processes support student achievement. He was responsible for launching the business line in 2006 and presided over its rapid growth, overseeing a team working with school systems nationwide to implement the recommendations of TNTP's 2005 Unintended Consequences report. Tim previously served as TNTP's managing partner for multiple contracts, including the NYC Teaching Fellows program (NYCTF), the largest of The New Teacher Project's alternate route to certification programs. He began his career in education as a Teach For America corps member in Baltimore. He holds a BA in American Studies from Northwestern University and a MA in Teaching from Johns Hopkins University.

With both positions effective immediately, Ariela and Tim are excited to lead The New Teacher Project and its 120-plus employees. Ariela said, “TNTP’s strength lies in its employees and their tenacity in the name of giving all students—particularly those in urban and rural schools—the chance to succeed. Together we will do what it takes to have a positive and lasting impact on our nation’s schools and children.”
