Teacher Recruitment
The New Teacher Project utilizes an integrated approach to the recruitment, selection, training, and continued development of new teachers. Continually refined since 1997, these models focus on attracting and developing excellent new teachers who will improve student achievement.

Our expertise spans across the following areas:

Recruitment

TNTP is nationally recognized as an expert in teacher recruitment. We help our clients attract outstanding, diverse individuals who have the talent and desire to improve educational opportunities for disadvantaged children. We specialize in attracting new teachers for shortage-area subjects such as math, science and special education, and for high-need schools that are struggling to raise student achievement. We accomplish this through:

  • Establishing outcomes-based, data-driven recruitment campaigns
  • Inspiring candidates with compelling, high-impact recruitment messages and materials, including interactive program websites
  • Using a range of proven recruitment strategies that include internet marketing, candidate cultivation, print advertising, community outreach, and specially trained teacher recruiters
  • Training full- and part-time recruiters to market the district effectively and employ our proven recruitment strategies
  • Constantly monitoring and adjusting the recruitment campaign to ensure the most cost effective use of limited resources

Selection

The New Teacher Project has found that teachers' character traits and leadership skills are the greatest determinants of their success. Our rigorous selection model places candidates in a number of challenging scenarios that enable us to determine their capacities for leadership, problem-solving and continuous learning. We help select outstanding teachers by using:

  • A proven set of selection criteria based on achievement, character, leadership and other fundamental qualities and personality traits
  • Trained selectors and a continually refined, research-based selection model
  • A highly professional, rigorous and competitive application process that maximizes our ability to assess candidates’ qualifications and inspires candidates to teach
  • Carefully-structured and normed rating tools that promote consistent assessment of candidates
  • Rigorous training and quality control to ensure that the selection process is implemented effectively and fairly

Training

The New Teacher Project believes that all new teachers, regardless of prior experience, should take part in an intensive pre-service training program. All participants in our Teaching Fellows programs complete this training prior to becoming full-time teachers. For additional information, please visit our Training & Certification page.

Placement

In order to achieve lasting change in a district, The New Teacher Project believes that new teachers must be placed in challenging yet supportive environments. To this end, we work with our district partners to identify schools that have chronic teacher vacancies and establish efficient teacher hiring procedures. We work to ensure that the overall placement process for program participants is as timely and predictable as possible, as well as reflective of the needs and interests of all involved parties - the schools, the district and the program participants themselves. Our work in this area includes:

  • Clearly communicating the placement and hiring process to new teacher candidates and schools
  • Facilitating opportunities for participants to interview with principals or school representatives through events and individual interviews
  • Enabling principals to quickly and easily search for and review candidates based on such details as education, testing information, subject area eligibility, and language proficiency through TNTP’s TeacherTrack system (see Technology for more information)
  • Offering online interview scheduling tools that link principals and candidates
  • Identifying process efficiencies that minimize the length of the hiring timeline as much as possible
  • Clustering new teachers in schools, to encourage the development of peer support networks

Technology

The New Teacher Project's teacher hiring programs benefit from TeacherTrack, TNTP's proprietary web-based applicant-tracking system, as well as our in-house information technology team. By automating operational aspects of the recruitment, selection, training, placement and hiring processes, TeacherTrack enables program staff to focus on providing exceptional customer service as well as selecting the highest quality candidates, rather than tracking paperwork. In addition to other features, TeacherTrack currently enables our programs to:

  • Accept and store online applications, including resumes and cover letters
  • Screen applicants using TNTP's custom selection model via the internet
  • Offer online interview event scheduling to applicants
  • Provide individualized information, reminders and materials to applicants through an interactive "Status Viewer" that shows their progress in the application process
  • Generate custom emails to correspond with candidates at all stages of the application process
  • Offer principals the ability to review the application materials of accepted candidates and schedule interviews with candidates
  • Easily generate reports of key program information and candidate data
  • Track the placement of new teachers into specific school assignments
  • Track the status and history of each candidate at every point in the recruitment and hiring process
  • Track the submission of district paperwork required for the district's hiring process
