The New Teacher Project is committed to finding solutions that work for our clients. To date, we have worked with districts, state departments of education, universities and other entities in a variety of ways:

We create and run high-quality alternate routes to certification to attract and prepare exceptionally talented people from non-traditional backgrounds to teach, particularly for high need areas and hard-to-staff schools. Since 1997, we have recruited and prepared over 13,000 new teachers for school districts across the country. In 2004, our NYC Teaching Fellows program received nearly 15,000 applications and utimately hired approximately 1,850 dedicated new teachers for classrooms across the city.

We offer high-need certified teacher recruitment programs to help school systems address specific needs and vacancies in shortage area subjects such as math, science, and special education. We have recently developed such programs for school districts in New York City, New Orleans and Dallas.

We enter into strategic partnerships with school districts to focus on Human Resource reforms that increase the efficiency and effectiveness of hiring processes. We focus on improving teacher recruitment, selection, placement, pre-service training, and program administration, beginning with a thorough analysis of current efforts. We then make recommendations and work with existing staff to implement those recommendations, building the school district or state’s capacity to recruit and develop excellent new teachers for years to come. Under a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, for example, we are currently working with two major urban school districts to assess and improve their hiring processes from beginning to end.

We design and implement innovative rural recruitment programs for states with large rural areas that face challenges attracting high-quality teachers. In states like Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana and Virginia, TNTP has helped coordinate the recruitment and hiring efforts of widely scattered rural districts to maximize their ability to draw new teachers to their schools.

We develop innovative training and certification programs for high-achieving individuals with or without prior education backgrounds. For example, TNTP has collaborated with the University of New Orleans to create their Practitioner Teacher Program and with Mercy College in New York City to redesign and oversee their teacher preparation and certification program. With support from Washington Mutual, TNTP has also designed and piloted a Content Seminar Series for new teachers in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Louisiana and New York City.
